How Genetic Consultation and Testing Work
From first enquiry to final results, we make the process clear and stress-free. Most tests are quick, painless cheek swabs, and always guided by expert advice.
Clear steps. Expert care. Personal answers.
We understand that seeking a genetic consultation can feel overwhelming. That’s why we aim to make the process clear, supportive, and straightforward. Here’s what you can expect when you choose Schell Genetics:
Step 1: Make an Enquiry
Start by filling out our online enquiry form. Tell us a little about your concern, whether it's a personal health question, a family history of a condition, or something you've seen in a test result. Once we’ve received your message, we’ll contact you to explain the next steps and, if suitable, arrange an appointment for a video consultation.
Step 2: Have a Genetic Consultation
Before any testing can be done, you will have an online consultation with Dr Chayim Schell-Apacik. This is a key part of the process. Genetic conditions are complex, and the right testing depends entirely on your medical background, symptoms, and personal or family history.
During the consultation, we’ll take time to understand your concerns, answer your questions, and decide together which, if any, tests are appropriate. If testing is considered, you will receive a clear and personalised cost estimate. Prices can vary depending on the type of test, the urgency, and whether more than one family member is being tested.
Please note: there is never any pressure to go ahead with testing. Some people decide not to test at all, while others choose to wait and consider it later. Your consultation is about gaining understanding and options – not about making rushed decisions.
Step 3: Get Tested – Usually with a Simple Cheek Swab
Today, most genetic tests are done with a painless cheek swab – no needles needed. You or your child can do this at home or in a clinic setting, depending on the type of test. In some special cases, such as for Fragile X Syndrome, a blood sample might still be necessary. Don’t worry, we’ll explain everything clearly before anything happens.
Step 4: Wait for the Results
Once your sample is sent to the lab, the waiting begins. Most results are ready in four to six weeks, depending on the complexity of the test. We work only with trusted UK and EU-based labs that meet strict medical and legal standards. While you wait, we’re always here to answer questions or talk through any concerns you might have.
Step 5: Discuss the Results Together
When your results are ready, we’ll arrange a follow-up video consultation to go through them with you. Dr Schell-Apacik will explain what the results mean, what options you have, and what this might mean for you or your family. Whether it’s good news, uncertainty, or something more difficult, you will never be left alone with the information.
We want you to feel safe, informed, and supported throughout the process. Every step is taken with care – and always at your pace.
If you're ready to take the first step, simply fill in our enquiry form. We’ll guide you from there.
